This is a caricature of my friend, Reyna. This is how she looks when she gets real excited about something. Often, she'll shout her catch phrase, "YEAH YEAH YEAH!"

I wanted to try for the paper cut-out look (being inspired by Sam Bragg and Brittney Lee).

And (being inspired by Scott) I wanted to try using only the hard lasso tool for shapes.

The only parameter we had to work with on this project was that we had to use stop-motion.

Animation Club T-Shirts!

So yeah... two of the designs I submitted for the BYU Animation Club (Club 11) T-shirt competition are being printed. Whoo! If you want to order one and you didn't get the email with the order form just give me ten bucks and I will get you one. It's no big. But I will need to know if anyone wants a shirt by the 27th of March as the orders are due by noon on the 28th.

This Sega Genesis/Sonic the Hedgehog inspired design is a tribute to Jake Wyatt's senior film "Metro".

This Nintendo/Mega Man inspired design is a tribute to BYU Animation's Pajama Gladiator.

I was waiting to post it until I had a chance to color it but I decided that wouldn't necessarily make it look better or more accurate to the style I'm trying to copy.

For our fourth project in Ryan's character design class we had to character ourselves in a variety of different expressions. We had to include happy, sad, frightened, psycho, and confused. I also drew one without expression for a starting reference. Whadaya think?

Everyone in class referred to the last one as "the gay one." I was going for "confused." I guess "sexually confused" still counts. Right?

For our fourth project in character design we had to caricature celebrities. I went a little more obscure than Ryan wanted us to but I think most of the class recognized who I was drawing. Can you tell? If not, then I screwed up. I think I definitely could have done better on the first image here. I might post a revision sometime.

Second Project for Character Design Class

For this project we were to sketch clouds, trees, and rocks, for the purpose of learning the natural design flow found in nature. We were then supposed to take the natural design elements found in each of those things and incorporate them into two character designs of our own. I was looking at the curves of bonsai trees and I kept visualizing serpents. So I drew a snake. With this drawing however, I failed to incorporate the elements of nature to the degree Ryan wanted to see them displayed in this project.

This guy is a pebble-businessman. He is about to miss his bus.

This is my final for Intro to 3D Animation taught by Brent Adams in the Winter semester of 2010 at BYU. We were to model, rig, and animate something. It was my first time rigging and it was annoying but I learned a lot from it and I would do a lot of things differently if I were start over now. But that's always the case. I'm happy with how it came out for the most part.

These are some of the projects I've turned in so far in Joe Olson's Drawing for Animation class (technically named VAANM 494R: Special Problems in Animation).

Our subject for this first one was "Beasts of Burden from the craggy peaks of Oppenlander."

Get it?... Beast of Burden.

This was my preliminary in-class exercise for the beasts of burden project.

The second assignment was to create texture swatches using only ink line. I like some of these... Meh.

For this project we were to design an Urban Art Toy. The theme was our personal ancestry.

This dude is Arab. (I hope that was obvious)

Third And Final Group Photoboard Project

This was really fun to be a part of. Peter, Laura, Meehea, and Jared made one amazing group. This was Peter's concept. I wasn't so sure if the story would satisfy the expectations of our teacher but it turns out that I am a loser for thinking that way. Whaddaya know? Kelly loved it. I helped by taking pictures and editing some of the in Photoshop. We all sort of directed it together. It came out pretty much exactly like I imagined it when it was first described to me except there were more people hitting themselves in the original concept.

This was for our third project in Intro to Storyboarding. I didn't have much time to finish the tones on it and it's hard to justify spending too much more time fixing that when I am supposed to be working on new things. So it's sort of "meh". I liked the way the panel arrangement came out though. Still, I did better on the previous project. ...Meh.

This was my second project for storyboarding class. We had to express an idea in a single panel. At the time (and at many times since) the main thing on my mind was the pressing fear of not having a good project to show for critique in class. My teacher, Kelly told me it was the most accurate representation of what it's like to be in his class he'd ever seen. I was pleased to hear that. He then added, "But you still failed."

This and the light bulb were taken in the apartment of a girl I home teach. She was gracious enough to let me photograph her for a couple of projects. Thanks Jessica!

The knives are actually the colors shown and they are very cruel. Two of the three girls in their apartment were cut by their unreasonably sharp edges.

Content

Though I didn't take this picture i did make this picture. Thanks to Kekoa for shooting this for me! I was trying to say something about how I feel about my school experience out here in Utah. I think of it as an adventure so I wanted to portray myself as though I were a comic book character having an average day for a comic book character. Was I successful?

I loved this class! My professor, Val Brinkerhoff was awesome. I got "A"s and "A" minuses on three of these four photos . Try to guess which one I got a "B" on.
